A Prayer for Lizzy

A friend of my mom’s sent an email this weekend that I want to share with everyone.  In the email, the friend explained that she had been reading Psalm 59 and God brought to her mind the cancer that is attacking Lizzy and so the words David wrote in this Psalm became words about Lizzy’s battle.  This email touched Lori and I deeply, so I’ve copied and pasted it below:

As I was reading and studying Psalm 59 (New Century Version) which David wrote at a time when Saul had sent his soldiers to kill him, cancer came to my mind.
God, save Lizzy from this cancer.
Protect her from those cancerous cells that have come against her body.
Save her from these evil doers
    and from this murderous disease.
Look, they are constantly trying to ambush her.
    This cruel disease attacks her,
but she did nothing to deserve this; she’s done nothing wrong, Lord.
She has done nothing wrong, but they have attacked her blood cells, blood levels, and platelet levels.
Wake up to help Lizzy, and look.
You are the Lord God All-Powerful, the God of Israel.
Arise and destroy these cancerous cells.
Do not give them any mercy. Selah
They come back at night.
Like dogs they growl and roam around her body.
Notice what comes from them.
   Pain and suffering,
    because they say, “Who cares?”
But, Lord, You laugh at them;
You make fun of all of them.
God, You are Lizzy’s strength, Her family is looking to You,
because You, God are her defender.
10 You, God love her, and You go in front of her.
You will help defeat this cancer.
11 Lord, our protector, please kill the cancer throughout her body,
With Your power scatter the cancerous cells to the open and defeat them with the chemo.
13 Destroy them in Your anger;
    destroy them completely!
Then all will know
that God rules over all cancer
to the ends of the earth. Selah
14 They come back at night.
    Like dogs they growl
    and roam around the body.
15 They wander about looking for cells to destroy,
and they howl if they do not find enough.
16 But Lizzy and her family will sing about Your strength.
In the morning they will sing about Your love.
You are her defender,
her place of safety in times of trouble.
17 God, You are her strength, she will sing praises to You.
God, You are her defender, You are the God who loves Lizzy.

  2. Outstanding! Thank you for sharing. Also, thank you for sharing your family’s experience as you battle through this and for keeping everyone updated. I will forward this to everyone on my contract list and ask them to pray this prayer as well. May God grant you a blessed Christmas with your family.

  3. Sending our love. I know that you don’t want to spend Christmas in the hospital. If anybody can make the best of that, it will be Lizzy and Treasure. Merry Christmas!

  4. There’s nothing more powerful than praying the LORD’s words over a person/situation. Praying this for Lizzy tonight and in the days to come.
